Cloze exercises for learning Spanish
In a cloze exercise you fill a gap in a text. In Spanish practice, that might look like this:
No ___ ir al cine esta noche.
With the meaning “I can’t go to the cinema tonight”, the intended answer is puedo. You need to produce the form of poder meaning “I can”. The sentence also has a useful pattern in it: poder followed by an infinitive, such as ir.
Without the English meaning, several answers could fit, including quiero. That is the first design problem with this format. You need enough information in the exercise to answer fairly.
What the gap asks you to do
With a typed gap you supply an answer rather than select one from a list. You might retrieve a word, choose a grammatical form or complete a phrase you have learned.
These are related but different tasks. With Necesito ___ un hotel you can practise reservar, meaning “to book”. With Ayer ___ al médico, and “I went” as the cue, you can practise fui. With Hay que ___ una decisión you can practise the phrase tomar una decisión, meaning “to make a decision”.
If you get one right, that does not mean you can do all the others. You should be able to see what the exercise is for, and the feedback should be about the answer you actually gave.
The sentence should help
In a good sentence the word has a meaningful setting and is not buried in unfamiliar Spanish. For someone learning silla, Mi silla es roja is easier to work with than a sentence containing several unfamiliar verb forms and clauses.
Whether written for a learner or taken from an existing source, the sentence should sound natural and be understandable at the intended level, and the target word should have a useful meaning in it.
The answer must also be fair. The answer to El ___ económico could be desarrollo, crecimiento or another suitable noun. If only one particular word counts as correct, there has to be a clear cue, or every alternative the prompt allows has to count as correct too.
Combine word and sentence practice
In a review of deliberate vocabulary-learning activities, there were benefits from word lists and flashcards as well as gap-filling. Results varied with the activity and the kind of word knowledge tested. Choose the exercise for what you want to practise: a meaning, a form or a use in context.
With individual-word practice you can learn a new meaning without having to understand the surrounding grammar. In sentence practice you then use the word in a particular form and context. In Vozelu you do both.
Use the correction
Try to answer before revealing the word. If you need help, look at the correction and read the completed sentence. Check what went wrong. Did you forget the word, use the wrong ending or misunderstand the prompt?
For example, Quiero que vengas means “I want you to come”. If you wrote vienes, you can understand the correction better with a brief explanation of the subjunctive after quiero que. You can combine explicit grammar teaching with practice. You do not have to wait for the pattern to become clear through repetition alone.
Return to the word after some other practice, and again on a later occasion. A correct answer right after you have seen the correction is different evidence from remembering it days later.
How Vozelu uses the format
In Vozelu you first see a new word, then type it from memory, and later get sentence and audio tasks as your practice develops. Your answers are checked after you submit them, and later reviews are timed from the record of them. The sequence and its limits are on the method page.
A sentence gap is a bounded task. When you read a whole passage or express your own meaning, you need other skills.
