English–Spanish cognates: using the words that look familiar
Información, posible and universidad may look familiar before you formally study them. English and Spanish share many words with related origins, often through Latin and the languages that borrowed from it.
With these similarities you can make sense of a passage. But no English speaker starts with a fixed number of Spanish words they can already understand and use.
What a cognate gives you
Cognates are words with a shared historical origin. In language-learning materials, the term is often used for related words where the learner can recognise the connection from the form and meaning.
From a resemblance you can guess a meaning. You still need to check whether it fits the sentence. Some related words have developed different uses, and a plausible guess can be wrong while the whole paragraph still seems to make sense.
English is a Germanic language that borrowed extensively from French and Latin. Spanish developed from Latin. English is still not a Romance language because of the shared vocabulary, and Spanish words were not formed by editing modern English ones.
Recognise some useful patterns
| English | Spanish | A pattern to notice |
|---|---|---|
| information | información | -tion/-ción |
| decision | decisión | -sion/-sión |
| university | universidad | -ity/-idad in this pair |
| famous | famoso | -ous/-oso |
| possible | posible | Related -ble endings |
| artist | artista | -ist/-ista |
| active | activo/activa | -ive/-ivo or -iva |
| culture | cultura | Related endings and root |
Treat these as patterns to recognise. They are not rules for manufacturing words. Not every English word ending in -tion can be translated by replacing those letters with -ción. You still need to check meaning, spelling and word formation.
Test the meaning in context
In La universidad publicó los resultados de la investigación, you can understand the sentence from several familiar-looking words. Investigación may be “research” here, rather than the first English word “investigation” that comes to mind.
The connection is useful even when the best translation differs. In a bilingual dictionary with examples you see the range of meanings more clearly than in a single gloss.
If you work in a field with shared technical vocabulary, you can use that knowledge with a relevant Spanish text. But a technical article is not automatically easier than an everyday conversation; background knowledge, sentence structure and listening demands matter too.
Learn how the Spanish word behaves
If you recognise comunicar, you still do not have every form you will need. In comuniqué the spelling changes so that the consonant sound stays the same before e. Organización has a written accent and is feminine: la organización.
Listen to the pronunciation and practise a useful sentence. If you want to produce the word later, attempt it from its meaning before checking the answer. You may recall the word more easily from the visual resemblance, but it is not a substitute for making the attempt.
Watch for partial matches
Asistir often means “attend”, though it also has uses involving assistance. Actualmente means “currently”. It does not mean “actually”. False friends are worth learning with complete examples.
Use familiar-looking words to make reading more accessible. Check the ones that matter to the message, and keep examples of uses you want to remember. The benefit is practical help with particular words.
