The simple future

Type the missing word in each sentence. You hear each sentence read by a native voice.

1 of 10

(extrañar) a Tomás, también.

I'll miss Tomás, too.

The rule

In everyday conversation, Spanish often uses ir a + infinitive instead (voy a llamar mañana), but the simple future appears in writing, formal speech, and predictions. It also does something English cannot: express a guess about the present (estará en casa, "he must be at home").

The pattern

Add the future endings to the full infinitive. All three verb groups (-ar, -er, -ir) use the same endings.

él, ella, ustedhablarácomerávivirá

Some common verbs have an irregular stem but keep the same endings:

tenertendr-
salirsaldr-
venirvendr-
ponerpondr-
hacerhar-
decirdir-
poderpodr-
sabersabr-
quererquerr-
haberhabr-

These same stems are used in the conditional, the tense the next lesson covers.

The future can also express probability about the present: ¿Dónde estará? means "Where could he be?" not "Where will he be?"

Examples

  • Mañana hará mucho calor. It will be very hot tomorrow.
  • Comeremos a las dos.We will eat at two.
  • Tendré que pensarlo.I will have to think about it.
  • Ellos saldrán temprano. They will leave early.
  • ¿Dónde estará Juan?Where could Juan be?
  • ¿Será verdad?Could it be true?

Watch out

  • Teneremos tiempo mañana. Tendremos tiempo mañana.Tener uses the irregular stem tendr-, not tener-.
  • Haceré la cena y deciré la verdad. Haré la cena y diré la verdad.Hacer and decir use the irregular stems har- and dir-.
  • Yo saliré con mis amigos. Yo saldré con mis amigos.Salir uses the irregular stem saldr-, not salir-.
  • ¿Dónde está Juan? (guessing where he might be). ¿Dónde estará Juan?If you are guessing, the future form expresses that uncertainty.
