Time expressions with hacer

1 of 10

no hablamos con ella.

We haven't spoken to her in years.

The rule

English says "I have lived here for two years" or "I arrived three days ago." Spanish handles both with hacer, and the verb tenses it takes are different from what English leads you to expect.

The pattern

For "ago," put hace after a verb in the preterite: Llegué hace tres días (I arrived three days ago).

For an action that started in the past and continues now, use hace + time + que + present tense: Hace dos años que vivo aquí (I have lived here for two years). The same meaning works with desde hace: Vivo aquí desde hace dos años.

Use desde without hace before a specific point in time: Vivo aquí desde 2024.

For an action that had been going on up to a past moment, use hacía + time + que + imperfect: Hacía dos horas que esperaba cuando llegó el autobús (I had been waiting for two hours when the bus arrived).

Examples

  • Llegué hace tres días.I arrived three days ago.
  • Hace dos años que vivo aquí.I have lived here for two years.
  • Vivo aquí desde hace cinco años.I have lived here for five years.
  • Hace mucho que no te veo.I have not seen you in a long time.
  • ¿Cuánto tiempo hace que estudias español?How long have you been studying Spanish?
  • ¿Cuánto hace que llegó?How long ago did he arrive?
  • Hacía dos horas que esperaba cuando llegó el autobús.I had been waiting for two hours when the bus arrived.

Watch out

  • Hace dos años viví aquí. (still living there). Hace dos años que vivo aquí.Without que, hace dos años viví aquí means you lived here two years ago. With que and the present tense, the two years continue.
  • Hace dos años que he vivido aquí. Hace dos años que vivo aquí.When the action is still going on, use the present tense after hace + time + que, not the present perfect.
  • Vivo aquí desde hace 2024. Vivo aquí desde 2024.Use desde hace with a length of time (cinco años). Use desde alone with a specific date or year.
