The pluperfect
Type the missing word in each sentence. You hear each sentence read by a native voice.
Cuando llamaste, nosotros ya (salir) de casa.
When you called, we had already left home.
The rule
In English you say "I had already eaten when she arrived." Spanish works the same way, using the imperfect of haber plus a past participle. You will see this tense constantly in stories and narratives.
The pattern
Form the pluperfect with the imperfect of haber + past participle.
| Person | haber (imperfect) |
|---|---|
| yo | había |
| tú | habías |
| él, ella, usted | había |
| nosotros | habíamos |
| ellos, ellas, ustedes | habían |
The participle does not change: había comido, había salido, había hecho.
Use the pluperfect when one past event happened before another: Cuando llegué, ella ya había comido. (When I arrived, she had already eaten.)
The same irregular participles from the present perfect apply: hacer becomes hecho, escribir becomes escrito, ver becomes visto, decir becomes dicho, abrir becomes abierto, volver becomes vuelto.
Examples

Watch out

- Ella había hacido la tarea. Ella había hecho la tarea.Hacer has the irregular participle hecho.
