Por vs. para

Type the missing word in each sentence. You hear each sentence read by a native voice.

1 of 10

Fui pan y leche al supermercado.

I went to the supermarket for bread and milk.

The rule

Both por and para translate as "for" in English, but they do different jobs. This lesson sorts out which one to use. Getting por and para right removes one of the most common sources of confusion in everyday Spanish.

The pattern

Para points forward toward a goal, destination, or deadline:

UseExampleMeaning
purposepara aprenderin order to learn
destinationpara Madridtoward Madrid
recipientpara tifor you
deadlinepara el lunesby Monday
opinionpara míin my opinion

Por explains a cause, a route, or a means:

UseExampleMeaning
causepor la lluviabecause of the rain
durationpor dos horasfor two hours
exchangepor diez eurosfor ten euros
routepor la callethrough/along the street
meanspor teléfonoby phone
frequencydos veces por semanatwice per week
on behalf ofpor tifor your sake

When both seem possible, ask the question. ¿Por qué? asks for a cause: ¿Por qué cancelaron? Por la lluvia. ¿Para qué? asks for a purpose: ¿Para qué estudias? Para aprender.

Learn these as fixed phrases: por favor, por ejemplo, por supuesto, por eso, por fin, para siempre, para nada.
