También and tampoco
Type the missing word in each sentence. You hear each sentence read by a native voice.
No tengo tiempo, y tú .
I don’t have time, and you don’t either.
The rule
Use también when the idea is positive and tampoco when it is negative. Choosing the right word matters most in short replies such as “Me too” and “Me neither.”
The pattern
También means “also” or “too.” Use it with a positive idea.
| Someone says | You agree |
|---|---|
| Me gusta el café. | Yo también. |
| Voy a la fiesta. | Yo también voy. |
Tampoco means “either” or “neither.” Use it with a negative idea.
| Someone says | You agree |
|---|---|
| No me gusta el café. | Yo tampoco. |
| No voy a la fiesta. | Yo tampoco voy. |
When tampoco comes before the verb, it already makes the sentence negative. Do not add no.
Tampoco quiero ir. = I do not want to go either.
When tampoco comes after the verb, keep no before the verb.
No quiero ir tampoco. = I do not want to go either.
