Hotel check-in in Spanish, and everything about the room, in Mexico, Spain, Colombia and Argentina
Hotel Spanish is short and repetitive. The sentences at the desk are the same every time, and so are the ones you need when the shower runs cold at eleven at night. This page has the arrival, the room, the problems, the messages an Airbnb host sends, and the check-out, with the words that differ between Mexico, Spain, Colombia and Argentina.
The room, in four countries
| Mexico | Spain | Colombia | Argentina | |
|---|---|---|---|---|

| Intercom | el interfón | el telefonillo or el portero automático | el citófono | el portero eléctrico |
Una habitación doble means a room for two people in all four countries, which may come with one bed or two, so say which you want.

What the host will write: Te espero en la puerta. El portero te abre. Tocá el timbre del 4B, ring the bell for 4B, with tocá the Argentine vos form. La llave está en la caja, el código es 1234. Cualquier cosa me escribes, message me if anything comes up, which is the standard sign-off in Mexico and Colombia.
A flat is el departamento in Mexico and Argentina and el apartamento in Spain and Colombia. The ground floor is la planta baja in Spain and Argentina, and the first floor is one up from it. In Mexico and Colombia people count the ground floor as el primer piso, so the numbers in the lift are one apart from what a Spaniard expects.
Tipping and checking out
Housekeeping is tipped daily in Mexico, left on the pillow or the desk, and the amount a coffee costs is normal. In Colombia and Argentina a small tip at the end of the stay is welcome without being expected. In Spain, hotel housekeeping is usually not tipped at all. Porters who carry bags are tipped in all four.

Questions people ask
Habitación or cuarto? Habitación at any hotel in the four countries. Cuarto is the everyday Mexican word for a room and is fine at a small place. In Argentina la pieza is a room in a house rather than a hotel.
Do I need to speak Spanish at a big hotel? Staff at the desk of a chain hotel will usually switch to English. Housekeeping, the porter and the person who fixes the shower usually will not, and those are the conversations this page is for.
What time is check-in and check-out? Most often two or three in the afternoon for check-in and eleven or twelve for check-out, in all four countries. Ask when you book: ¿A qué hora puedo entrar? and ¿a qué hora es la salida?
Why does the hotel keep my passport? It does not. It copies it and hands it straight back. Ask for it back if it stays behind the desk: ¿Me devuelve el pasaporte, por favor?
What is a “factura” in Mexico? A formal tax invoice, issued with your tax details, not the same as the receipt. If you just want proof of payment, ask for el recibo or el comprobante.
How do I ask for a room without stairs? ¿Hay habitaciones en la planta baja? or ¿el edificio tiene ascensor? In Mexico, ¿tiene elevador?
Do I tip the person who carries my bags? Yes, in all four, coins or a small note. The word for them is el botones.
How do I say my room was cleaned badly? La habitación no quedó bien limpia. It is a complaint without an accusation, and it is enough to get the room done again.
