Spanish false friends: familiar words with different meanings

A Spanish word can look familiar, and you can still take the wrong meaning from it. Actualmente resembles “actually”, but Actualmente vivo en Madrid means “I currently live in Madrid”.

These pairs are often called false friends. Some are historically related words whose meanings have diverged; for the term, the resemblance does not have to be accidental.

Start with common contrasts

Spanish A common meaning For the English lookalike, try
embarazada pregnant avergonzado/avergonzada: embarrassed
actualmente currently en realidad or de hecho: actually
sensible sensitive sensato/sensata: sensible
largo long grande: large
fingir pretend Distinguish it from pretender: intend or aim

These are starting translations. Choose the form and expression that fit the sentence.

No pretendo ofenderte means “I don’t intend to offend you”. With it you state an intention. It is not always an apology. Finge estar dormido means “He pretends to be asleep”. If you compare the two, you have a usable distinction.

Check the meaning of the whole expression

Realizar un estudio means to carry out a study. English “realise” in the sense of becoming aware is usually expressed with darse cuenta: Me di cuenta de que era tarde.

English “realise a dream” and Spanish realizar un sueño are closer. That overlap is why it is better to learn uses than to declare that a pair of words can never translate one another.

Likewise, asistir a una reunión means to attend a meeting. But asistir also has meanings involving help or care. “It only means attend” would be another misleading shortcut.

Some warnings are exaggerated

Excitado can have a sexual meaning, but it is not exclusively sexual. The dictionary entry for excitar also includes enthusiasm, agitation and other reactions. Estoy emocionado por el viaje is a straightforward way to say you are excited about a trip; still, not every use of excitado would cause offence.

Constipado is commonly used for having a cold in Spain. For constipation, estreñido is the useful word to know. The words and preferred expressions you hear can vary by region, so check the particular use rather than treating one short list as exhaustive.

Molestar commonly means to bother or annoy: No quiero molestarte. In modern use, English speakers usually use “molest” for sexual abuse or assault. To translate it, you need a term that fits the context.

Practise a contrast you understand

Write one example for each meaning you confuse. For instance: Actualmente trabajo en una escuela and En realidad, trabajo en una escuela. With the first you say where you work now; with the second you can correct someone’s mistaken assumption.

Read or hear the examples, then try producing them later without looking. In a real passage, pause if the message is unclear because of a familiar-looking word. Check its uses and return to the sentence.

A mistake is something to correct. A few well-chosen examples are more useful than warnings that you will embarrass yourself with every false friend.
