Where poder breaks the pattern

  • puedo, puedes, puede, pueden. The stem becomes pued- where it is stressed. In podemos and podéis the stress moves to the ending and the stem stays pod-. The present subjunctive does the same: pueda, puedas.
  • pude. The preterite has its own stem, pud-, and no written accent on pude or pudo. The imperfect subjunctive is built on it: pudiera.
  • podré. The future and conditional use podr- in place of poder-.
  • pudiendo. The gerund changes the o of the stem to u.

Vos and vosotros

vos podés, podéArgentina, Uruguay, Paraguay and much of Central America. The other tenses use the tú form.
vosotros podéis, podedSpain. Latin America says ustedes pueden.
