Debemos seguir las reglas.

We have to go by the rules.

Where seguir breaks the pattern

  • sigo. Before a and o, gu is written g: sigo, siga, sigas.
  • sigo, sigues, sigue, siguen. The stem becomes sigu- where it is stressed. In seguimos and seguís the stress moves to the ending and the stem stays segu-. The present subjunctive does the same: siga, sigas.
  • siguió, siguieron. In the preterite, the e of the stem becomes i in the él and ellos forms: siguió, siguieron. So does the whole imperfect subjunctive: siguiera. The present subjunctive has sigamos, sigáis. The gerund is siguiendo.
