Where decir breaks the pattern

  • digo. The yo form of the present ends in -go. The present subjunctive is built on it: diga, digas, digamos.
  • dices, dice, dicen. The stem becomes dic- where it is stressed. In decimos and decís the stress moves to the ending and the stem stays dec-.
  • dije. The preterite has its own stem, dij-, and no written accent on dije or dijo. After j, the ellos form ends in -eron: dijeron. The imperfect subjunctive is built on it: dijera.
  • diré. The future and conditional use dir- in place of decir-.
  • di. The tú command is one syllable.
  • diciendo. The gerund changes the e of the stem to i.
  • dicho. The past participle is irregular: he dicho, había dicho.
