Where tener breaks the pattern

  • tengo. The yo form of the present ends in -go. The present subjunctive is built on it: tenga, tengas, tengamos.
  • tienes, tiene, tienen. The stem becomes tien- where it is stressed. In tenemos and tenéis the stress moves to the ending and the stem stays ten-.
  • tuve. The preterite has its own stem, tuv-, and no written accent on tuve or tuvo. The imperfect subjunctive is built on it: tuviera.
  • tendré. The future and conditional use tendr- in place of tener-.
  • ten. The tú command is one syllable.

Vos and vosotros

vos tenés, tenéArgentina, Uruguay, Paraguay and much of Central America. The other tenses use the tú form.
vosotros tenéis, tenedSpain. Latin America says ustedes tienen.
